Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses creative processes like drawing, painting, or working with clay alongside talking. It offers a different way to explore emotions, reflect on your experiences, and support psychological healing.
It can be particularly helpful if you're feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or going through something difficult. Art therapy gives you space to process feelings that may be complex, confusing, or hard to express through words alone.
The focus isn’t on making ‘good’ art. You don’t need any artistic skills or experience. Instead, the creative process becomes a tool for communication, insight, and emotional regulation. physically making something can be useful; it helps emotionally regulate you and your nervous system, it can also help you to think through this which then may help us understand things more or realise things. And having something visual in front of you can be a useful way to integrate and come to terms with things.
As a trauma-informed art therapist, I offer a calm, compassionate space where you can begin to make sense of what you’re going through at your own pace.
What can I expect in a session?
Sessions are led by you. You can choose how much you want to talk, and how much you want to use art materials. There’s no pressure to draw or create anything specific—we go at your pace.
I provide a calm, non-judgemental space and a range of materials like pencils, paints, pastels, etc. Some people come in and start making straight away; others prefer to talk first. All approaches are welcome.
The first session is a chance for us to get to know each other and for you to get a feel for how art therapy works. We’ll talk about what’s bringing you to therapy, what you’d like support with, and any hopes or concerns you might have.
You’re welcome to use art materials in this session, but there’s no pressure—you can talk, create, or simply get comfortable in the space. I’ll explain how the sessions are structured, answer any questions, and together we can decide whether it feels like a good fit to continue.
I firmly believe It’s important that you work with a therapist who feels right for you, so this session is also about seeing whether we’re a good match.
For children and young people, I may spend part of the session speaking with a parent or carer, depending on what’s age-appropriate and supportive.
We’ll start with a free 30-minute consultation to see if art therapy feels like the right fit. From there, sessions are usually weekly or fortnightly (whichever works best for you) and last 50 minutes.
